Since the release of iOS 6.1 earlier today there has been much confusion on the net regarding exactly what you should do to prepare for this new 6.1 untethered jailbreak, so i will explain all the info im aware of at this time.
One of the leading developers/hackers of the 6.1 Untethered Jailbreak @MuscleNerd tweeted earlier today that you must do the update the old fashioned way on your computer with iTunes. His reasoning was that there are slight differences between OTA and iTunes versions. In case you dont know what OTA (Over The Air) means, it is the ability of updating your iOS device via your settings app located in the general panel and software update section. The differences of OTA and iTunes are found in the SHSH blobs. This basically means that the OTA 6.1 Jailbreak will come out at a later date than the initial release of the Untethered 6.1 jailbreak. There wont be two versions of the jailbreak, the hackers will simply release a newer updated jailbreak program.
A few hours ago another leading developer/hacker @pimskeks tweeted more info regarding @MuscleNerds tweet. Pimskeks said do you not only need to update via iTunes on your computer, but also perform a full restore to 6.1 on your idevice as well. Do keep in mind you will have to backup your device’s data before the full restore if you dont want to lose anything.
Here is the proper way to get your iOS device ready for the Jailbreak. Even if you have already updated to 6.1 via iTunes or OTA follow these steps.
Step 1: Open iTunes on your computer and plug in your iOS device via USB.
Step 2: Select “Back Up Now” so you dont lose anything, pictures apps ect.
Step 3: Click “Restore iDevice” then ” Restore and Update” if your iTunes doesn’t have 6.1 it will download it first prior to restoring your device.
Step 4: When the restore finishes you will get the choice of setting up as a new idevice or “restore from a backup” i would restore from your backup so none of your data is lost. Then iTunes will restore it from the backup.
Step 5: Unplug your iOS device your done, now to wait for the release of the long awaited iOS 6.1 Untethered Jailbreak!
On a side note for those of you that might not have access to a computer and can only do a OTA update you will have to wait for the jailbreak program to be updated. I do need to ask though if you dont have a computer to update the way i explained above, then how are you even going to jailbreak? Jailbreaking requires a computer too.
